 Lone traveler

The sun had set long ago, and the moon was high in the sky plump and round as ever. Critters where making all the kinds of sounds one would expect at night in a wooded pat of the mountains. That is all but one. One creature walked heavily through, crunching branches and leaves beneath its feet, grumbling to itself, “We will have her soon, my beauties, soon she will pay. We will play, before she decays on that day. She will remember what she did to us that wretched day. Remember she will, as he dismember her on a hill.”

Through the shadows of trees, Gorkill slithered holding his two headed snake staff. He was searching for the very woman who had scorned him at birth. His pasty skin glowed in the light of the full moon, but quickly stopped glowing as he entered again into a shadow. Every once in a while the wretched creature would stop and looked around himself as if he had heard something. His bat like ear twitched as it tried to pick up any sound of any one following him….. or any one that could be lunch.

Naelia was scouting. She always took a shift and watched for the ‘enemy’ and those caught in the middle. She was cloaked as usual, carrying her staff but walking quietly. She wore a simple dress, black with silver embroidery on the neck, waist, and the bottom of the skirt. Her large black cloak covered her whole body, with the hood covering her head. As she walked she heard talking, so she approached the source. She heard something about dismembering and saw his sword come out. She watched the odd creature looking around. Had she been heard? What WAS the creature she was looking at? She was towering over practically.

Gorkill slowed down as he thought he heard some one. His ears shifted even more trying to hear even the grass grow. Though his eyes where poor, his ears more then made up for it. So it was pointless for him to look around. Now he became more careful as to where he placed his feet, making sure to avoid branches and leaves laying on the ground. Instead of openly talking to his staff the creature whispered. “What is this? Is there something we miss? Is there a miss that wants me or are we just in need of slumber? Should I find some lumber, and spark an ember? Perhaps I should find a deer to dismember to cook over our ember. Yes yes that is it my pet, let us find a deer to dismember to set over our lumber sparked by our ember.” As he spoke he got more excited and gradually started to speak louder and louder.

Quietly he moved watching his feet to make not a sound. He moved with quietness that comes from being a recluse. He moved from tree to tree looking for a tasty morsel to devour. Slowly a nest came into view just under a large fern. The needles that laid on the ground had all been broken, and one could see the marks where a couple of deer’s had rested. On several of the trees in the area, bark had been scraped of from antlers being rubbed up and down on them. Gorkill made his way down into the center of the nest. He climbed up a couple of branches and waited.

He was their for almost an hour before something actually happened. Out of the thicket of the forest came a doe and her young. They where both light brown with white spots spread across them. The younger deer didn’t think much about it and walked up to the tree and laid down. The older female walked cautiously not sure what to think. She knew something wasn’t right but she couldn’t tell what. Before she laid down next to her young, the female looked around one last time. The creature in the tree jumped from its hiding place and onto the adult deer’s back. Gorkill grabbed hold with one and used the other to pull one sword that was hidden inside his staff. He screamed “YEEEHAAA!” as the deer bucked and tried to throw the intruder of its back. Once the sword was free Gorkill slammed it through the spinal column of where the neck met the rest of the body. The young fawn was frightened and ran off back into the forest. Gorkill left the die deer to bleed out and went and grabbed some fire wood, then made a roaring fire when he came back to the deer. As the fire burned he prepared the deer to be cooked.

Naelia watched the creature with ease. He spoke to himself, but clearly had patience. He plotted and waited, so he wasn't a stupid creature. Whatever kind of creature he was. Her eyes focused, observing everything she could about his actions. A lot of time passed, and she was tempted to leave, but the creature didn't act asleep, so she stayed.

She watched unphased as the creature killed the doe. At this point it was clear, he wasn't part of the oppressors. She wasn't sure if he was a part of anything. He clearly needed mental help, but that wasn't why she was here. Naelia thought about how to approach the situation, if to approach at all. Finally she decided that the situation was delicate, so she approached carefully. "Hello." She said walking up into the lit area. "I am sorry to disturb your dinner." She said trying to make sure he didn't overreact, but she remained prepared for any reaction. She remained cloaked, waiting for his decision.

((Sorry, little drained))

Gorkill had just stuck a deer leg on the fire when the other being had stepped out of the woods. He didn’t really notice until she spoke, then rage filled him from his toes to his pointy ears. “I knew it! I knew it!” He screamed. “Oh how I blew it, I told you we where followed! How hollowed is her greeting for in this meeting she has followed us my beauties!” As he screamed he rose to his feet and proceeded to jump around angrily, throwing dirt everywhere, on the dead animal, into the fire, the tree on himself and at her. Sparks shot up from the open flam as some dirt flew across it. In the thicket a bush rustled and the young deer could be seen fleeing once again. He grabbed his two headed snake staff, and this time pulled out both blades that where hidden with in. He let out a blood curtailing scream as he turned to charge at the strange woman who walked into his presence. But he stopped just before the fire and stared at her with a curious look. Flipping his blades around Gorkill looked at both snake heads as if they where alive. “Come lets us not wallow in this act, instead let us swallow our rage, and talk about the age of facts that have just transpired.” He stabbed both swords into the ground and had the faces of the snakes positioned so they where staring right at the female. Then the elf-shifter continued to cook the doe leg. “Come, I feel inspire.” He was now talking in a more relaxed tone and acting as if nothing had happened. “Do you have a great deal to inquire, come mate what is your designate?” Gorkill was a strange little elf-shifter, but that was his way of asking the woman what her name was.

Naelia was slightly shocked by the extent of his anger, but only deepened her brows briefly. She stood there like a statue as he had his fit. Her eyes and reflexes were good, or she wouldn’t have made it this far. So she did nothing as he reacted to her presence. Had he come a few inches closer as he charged, she would have reacted. Luckily he didn’t. Instead he did a 180 change. He was now calm, still rhyming and asking questions in return. How should she respond to him? She didn’t give strangers her name, for her safety and theirs. Yet she had a feeling that he wasn’t tormented easily. Should she rhyme like he does? Or would that make things worse. As she approached, she lowered her hood to reveal black curly hair with light grey eyes.

“I, stranger,
am no danger.
I live around here,
but do not tell you where.
I do not give my name,
Perhaps you will not be the same?
Please, who are you?
For you are new.
I’m sorry for following you.”

Her words were slow and precise. She didn’t make them song like, instead tried to appeal to what he seemed to like. Perhaps he’d be more willing to talk when most of her words rhymed.

The strange creature looked up at her with a confused look. He did not understand why she rhymed, did she think he was stupid, or was she trying to mock him? Maybe she was just toying with him to see if he would give up some kind of information himself. Well he thought he was too clever for that, so he decided to lie to her about what he was doing here and what his name is.

“Why do you rhyme, Is that how you spend your time? My name? Useless, Worthless, Lame, Shame, its all the same.” His voice dropped a pitch as he spoke those last words, and his eyes averted in another direction away from the female standing in front of him. He pulled a small dagger out from under his belt and used to it cut off a piece of the leg. It still dripped red with blood as it slid into his mouth, almost as much as if he had cut it straight from the deer itself. Finally looking back at the female he spoke again. “Why do you follow? Or are you wallow and stumble across me.”

Naelia listened with amusement. He didn't seem to hear himself and he definitely didn't trust her. "I'm sorry." She said with a slight bow. There was no way to explain herself, so she moved on to the next question. "I was doing my usual area when I spotted you. I didn't approach until I thought it was safe." She said coolly. "Is this your normal area?" She asked, trying to gain a little more trust.
